LABOR RESEARCH & STATISTICS

OCCUPATIONAL INJURIES AND ILLNESSES

The Statistical Division conducts the Annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses from a sample of approximately 3,200 companies. The type of data collected on the survey includes annual average employment, total hours worked, and injury and illness totals for the state of Alabama. Demographic data and case characteristics are provided for cases that involve one day or more away from work. This survey is a stratified random sample that is conducted in conjunction with the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. Results of the survey, along with results of the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, are published each year and distributed by request.

CFOI

The Division collects fatality data in conjunction with the federal government initiative known as the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI). CFOI is a cooperative program of the Alabama Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. The census includes fatal work injuries that occur to the self-employed, in the course of farm activities, traffic accidents where the person was in work status, incidents occurring at the work place and employees in the public sector. CFOI compiles the most complete verifiable count of fatal occupational injuries in the United States.

OSHA LOG DATA

The newest annual study is the OSHA Log Data Collection Survey. It is designed to collect occupational injury and illness data from employers within specific industry and employment size specifications. The information collected is used to focus on OSHA activities including inspections, outreach and consultation and to measure the performance of the agency in meeting its goal of reducing workplace injuries and illnesses.
