Boilers and pressure can and sometimes do explode resulting in property damage,
injuries and death. We are exposed to the dangers of boilers and pressure vessels
daily. They are found in schools, churches, hospitals, factories and stores in Alabama.
The potential for accidents is well documented.

Am I required to have my boiler or pressure vessel inspected?
The Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Act ( Ala. Code Sections 25-12-1 to –22) requires all boilers and pressure vessels to be registered and inspected unless otherwise exempted ( see Section 25-12-7 of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Act for specific exemptions).

The owner or user is responsible for obtaining the required inspection and
maintaining their boilers and pressure vessels in safe working condition.

How do I arrange for an inspection of my boilers and pressure vessels?
If the boiler or pressure vessel is covered by boiler/machinery insurance contact your insurance company to arrange for the services of a qualified insurance inspector.
If the boiler or pressure vessel in uninsured a Deputy Inspector, employed by the
State will perform the inspection. Contact the Department of Labor at 334-242-3460 to schedule the inspection.

Inspections are required at 1 or 2 year intervals for boilers, depending on the type and 3 year intervals for pressure vessels.

Is there a fee associated with the inspection?
Yes. If the inspection is performed by an insurance inspector a fee is charged for the

The inspection certificate is evidence that the boiler or pressure vessel has been inspected and is safe to operate at the pressure shown on the certificate. Alabama law requires an inspection certificate and operation without the inspection certificate is a violation of law.
